Parabéns, Blog!

     A alguns, pode parecer bobagem ou futilidade comemorar o aniversário de um blog, mas, se for o caso, é porque provavelmente nunca foram blogueiros. Este blog, que criei exatamente em 28/04/2011, tem sido um projeto muito especial na minha vida pessoal e profissional e agora, para minha grande satisfação, completa 3 anos!

     Não consigo me dedicar ao Aprendizes de Escritores em tempo integral, mas estou aqui sempre que posso, principalmente quando bate a inspiração. É verdade o que os escritores dizem sobre a inspiração para um texto surgir de repente, do nada. Naquele instante, você tem que colocar o que está pensando no "papel". Essa chance que tenho no blog de, como digo, “brincar um pouco de escritora”, não tem preço.

     É aqui, em contrapartida ao meu trabalho sério e compenetrado como tradutora, que extravaso toda a minha criatividade e irreverência, escrevendo o que penso e enfeitando o blog do meu jeito. Além do slideshow acima (que acabei de atualizar) com uma seleção de um pouco de tudo que aprecio _ como livros, paisagens, animais, flores _, também gosto de acompanhar os meus textos e frases com imagens de domínio público da internet que tenham algo a ver com eles. Decidi dividir o blog em várias páginas por questões práticas, mas também porque “quanto mais espaço para escrever e rechear com os composites, colagens e scraps que adoro criar, melhor! Sintam-se à vontade, claro, para copiar as imagens de domínio público que desejarem. (Há, inclusive, gifs incríveis no “Cantinho do Seguidor e do Visitante”.)

    Embora este não seja um blog com fins lucrativos, faço “merchans” ocasionais a respeito no facebook e no Twitter (e tenho 2 páginas lá que também são uma extensão dele, entre os outros blogs). Procuro divulgá-lo porque gosto de compartilhar minhas opiniões com as pessoas, de comentar sobre o meu trabalho e de dar dicas que espero que sejam úteis a elas. Também gosto de entretê-las com as minhas histórias de vida, de fazê-las rir com o lado engraçado das coisas, ou de levá-las a refletir com o aspecto mais sério de alguns textos. Falando em humor, gosto de escrever textos bem-humorados e de dar vazão à minha veia cômica quando tenho a chance. Por diversão, faço o que chamo de “Cartões Cômicos” e os coloco numa página adicional do blog. Também comento sobre as minhas traduções numa das páginas e dou dicas de tradução em outra, esperando que sejam úteis para quem se interessa pela área. O blog não é sobre religião, mas também contém uma página dedicada à espiritualidade, uma parte essencial da vida. Há outra página repleta de citações de diversos pensadores.

    Meu blog não se enquadra exatamente numa categoria específica, como apenas escrita, tradução, ou livros. É, como sempre digo, eclético. Os livros são, sim, a base de tudo nele, mas como os próprios livros têm a capacidade de abraçar o mundo, não há limites de assuntos aqui. Para quem ainda não tem um blog, recomendo. (Eu tenho 6!) É um excelente lugar para se escrever e dar vazão à criatividade. É possível ter até 20 páginas adicionais num blog e, assim, dividi-las de acordo com os interesses, como fiz aqui.

     Desde que o criei, o blog passou por uma transformação total e vive em constante evolução, embora o conteúdo inicial tenha permanecido o mesmo. No começo, a página principal era sobre as traduções, e eu escrevia os meus textos em algumas das páginas adicionais. Então, me ocorreu que deixaria o blog mais interessante se fosse publicando os artigos e crônicas na página inicial. Assim, mudei tudo de lugar, coloquei os comentários sobre os livros traduzidos numa página adicional e batizei o blog de “Aprendizes de Escritores”. Também o chamo de Writers’ Apprentices porque o estou tornando bilíngue com o tempo. Além de ser uma extensão do Aprendizes de Escritores aqui, o Writers’ Apprentices Blog também existe como um blog individual de uma só página, em inglês. (O link está na cachoeira, no alto do layout.)

     Apesar do nome, o Aprendizes de Escritores não é um blog onde há apenas técnicas de escrita, como os blogs convencionais do gênero, embora também tenha uma página adicional com dicas de escrita. É um blog onde acho que eu mesma aprendo a escrever. Eu sou a aprendiz de escritores aqui e espero poder transmitir alguma coisa através dos meus textos a outros aspirantes a escritor, nem que seja, no mínimo, o encorajamento.

     Como já mencionei na página de apresentação, o blog também se destina a visitantes em geral que simplesmente queiram se entreter com seu conteúdo.

     É com orgulho, portanto, que comemoro o aniversário de 3 anos do Aprendizes de Escritores.

    Quero agradecer de coração aos seguidores e aos visitantes do blog, que me deixam muito feliz quando passam por aqui. tj*¬

Congrats, Blog!

     Some might think it’s foolish or frivolous to celebrate a blog’s anniversary and, in that case, it’s because they’ve never been bloggers. This blog, which I created precisely on 04/28/2011, has been a very special project in my personal and professional life, and now, to my great pride, it celebrates its third anniversary!

     I’m not able to dedicate myself to Aprendizes de Escritores/Writers’ Apprentices full time, but I’m here whenever I can, specially when inspiration comes through. It’s true what writers say about inspiration for a text emerging suddenly, out of the blue. In that instant, you must put your thoughts on “paper”. This chance I have on the blog of, as I use to say, “play a little as a writer”, is priceless.

     It’s here that, in counterpart to my serious and compenetrated work as a translator, I let all my creativity and irreverence come through, writing what I think and decorating the blog on my own way. Besides the slideshow above (which I’ve just updated) with a selection of a bit of everything I enjoy _ such as books, landscapes, animals, flowers _, I also like to add to my texts and phrases images of internet public domain that have something to do with them. I’ve decided to divide the blog into several pages for practical reasons, but also because “the more space to write and put the composites and collages I love to create, the better!” Be free, of course, to copy the public domain images you wish. (There’s also incredible gifs on the “Visitor’s and Follower’s Corner”.)

     Even though this is a non-profit blog, I use to divulge it occasionally with homemade adds on facebook and Twitter (and I have 2 pages there which are also an extension of it, among other blogs). I divulge it because I like to share my opinions with other people, to comment about my work and to give tips that I hope will be useful to them. I also like to entertain people with my daily life stories, to make them laugh with the funny side of things, or to think with the most serious side of some texts.

      Talking about sense of humor, I enjoy writing texts with a funny streak and letting my comic side come through whenever I have the chance. Just for fun, I create what I call “Comic Cards” and post them on an additional page of the blog. I also comment about my translations on one of the pages and give translation tips on another one, hoping they will be useful to those who are interested in the area. The blog is not about religion, but it also contains a page dedicated to spirituality, an essential part of life. There’s another page full of several thinkers’ quotes.

     My blog doesn’t fit exactly on a specific category, such as only writing, translation, or books. It’s eclectic, as I always say. Books are indeed the base of everything in it, but as books themselves have the capacity to embrace the world, there’s not limit of subjects in here. For those who still don’t have a blog, I recommend it. (I’ve got 6!) It’s an excellent place to write and to let creativity flow out. It’s possible to have up to 20 additional pages on a blog and, this way, to divide them according to one’s interests, as I did here.

     Since I created the blog, it has been through a total change and it’s on a constant evolution, thought the initial contents remain the same. In the beginning, the main page was about translations and I used to write my texts on some of the additional pages. Then, it occurred to me that the blog would be more interesting if I posted the articles and chronicles on the main page instead. This way, I changed everything from one place to another, putting the comments about the books I translated on an additional page and gave the blog the name Aprendizes de Escritores. I also call it Writers’ Apprentices because I’m turning it into a bilingual blog with time. Besides being an extension of the blog called Aprendizes de Escritores, the Writers’ Apprentices also exists as an individual blog of only one page, in English. (Its link is in the waterfall above, on the right side of the blog layout).

     Despite the name, Aprendizes de Escritores/Writers’ Apprentices is not a blog with writing techniques only, as the conventional blogs of the kind, though it does have an additional page with writing tips. It’s a blog where I myself learn to write. I’m the writers’ apprentice here, and I hope to transmit something thought my texts to other writers aspirants, even if it’s at least encouragement.

     As I mention on the presentation page, the blog is also destined to visitors in general who simply want to entertain themselves with its contents.

    I’m proud, therefore, to celebrate Aprendizes de Escritores/Writers’ Apprentices’ third anniversary.

    I’d like to offer my thanks from the heart to the blog’s followers and visitors, who make me very happy when they stop by. tj*¬

Dia Mundial do Livro

     Desde pequena, os livros sempre foram e continuam sendo meus companheiros inseparáveis. Como rato de biblioteca que se preze, já perdi a conta de quantos li, viajando por inúmeras páginas recheadas de vários tipos de histórias e gêneros. Também gosto de livros de autoajuda, que nos fazem sentir realmente bem, como se fizéssemos uma terapia personalizada.

     Quando leio, mergulho na história e aquele livro passa a fazer parte dos meus pensamentos diários; mal posso esperar para saber o que vai acontecer em seguida. Esse é o bom livro, o que cativa. Nos momentos em que estou lendo um livro, não penso em quase mais nada, esqueço as preocupações e problemas e me distraio através dessa agradável forma de lazer. Gosto, inclusive, de ler mais de um livro ao mesmo tempo, um romance e um de autoajuda ou de contos; um inglês e outro em português; e assim por diante. (Sem mencionar aquele em que estou trabalhando!) Acho que é uma ótima maneira de ler, pois estou sempre “dentro” de uma história e lendo outra coisa interessante ao mesmo tempo.

     Claro que os livros devem ser sempre vistos como companheiros, não como algo que nos isole das demais pessoas. Podem até nos acompanhar num passeio para lermos uma página ou outra num momento de descanso, mas temos de desfrutar os outros tipos de diversão. De qualquer modo, se há uma coisa prazerosa é aproveitarmos bem aquele tempo que podemos dedicar à leitura.

    No meu caso, os livros também se transformaram em companheiros de trabalho porque, há mais de 20 anos, são os originais da traduções que faço. É mais um motivo de eu adorar tanto o meu trabalho, pois acabo me aprofundando bem mais nesses livros do que se fosse uma leitura normal.

    Apesar de toda a bem-vinda tecnologia de hoje, que me ajuda muito em pesquisas e estudos, quando se trata da leitura como lazer, prefiro o livro de papel ao e-book, como sempre digo. Adoro andar por feiras de livros, livrarias e garimpar no sebo, olhando capas de livros, folheando páginas. Quando leio, gosto de pegar o livro impresso nas mãos, de folheá-lo, de descansar os olhos de telas eletrônicas e me ajeitar o mais confortavelmente possível, enquanto deixo a imaginação navegar por mais uma história.

     No dia 23 de abril, Dia Mundial do Livro, através do Blog Aprendizes de Escritores, onde escrevo (algo que sempre podemos aperfeiçoar através da leitura), parabenizo esse companheiro inestimável, o livro.

  

P.S.: Não podemos esquecer que milhões de pessoas no nosso país e no mundo não têm acesso nem a livros de papel, quanto mais a e-books. Jamais podemos considerar bibliotecas ou sebos como ultrapassados. Temos de divulgar projetos e iniciativas como as bibliotecas itinerantes, as promoções de livros das livrarias e as campanhas de doação de livros, doando livros sempre que possível.

World Book Day

     Since I was small, books have always been and continue to be my inseparable companions. As an incurable bookworm, I’ve read countless ones up to now, making journeys through thousands and thousands of pages with several kinds of stories and literary genres. I also enjoy self-help books, and I think they really make us feel good, as if we were going through a kind of personal therapy.

     When I read, I plunge into the story and that book becomes part of my daily thoughts. I can hardly wait to know what’s going to happen on the following pages. That’s the good book, the one that captivates us. The moments I’m reading, I don’t think about almost anything else, I forget my worries and problems, I entertain myself with this habit that’s also a pleasant leisure form. I also like to read more than one book at the same time, a novel and a self-help book or one with short stories, one in English another in Portuguese, and so on. (Not to mention the book I’m working with!) I think this is a great way to read because I’m always “inside” a story and reading another interesting thing at the same time.

     Naturally, books should always be seen as companions, not as something that isolates us from other people. They may even accompany us on an outing, for us to read a page or two while we rest, but we have to enjoy other kinds of entertainment too. Anyway, the time we can dedicate to read a book is totally enjoyable.

     In my case, books have also become work companions because, for more than 20 years, they have been the original form of the translations I do. It’s another reason why I love my work, because I end up going deeper in these books than if I were just reading them normally.

     Despite all welcomed modern technology, which helps me on researches and studies, when reading is for leisure, I prefer the printed book rather than the ebook, as I always say. I love to visit book fairs, book stores, to explore the shelves of the used books stores, admiring book covers, leafing through pages. When reading, I like to hold the printed book in my hands, to flip through the pages, to give my eyes some rest from the electronic screens and to settle into a comfortable place while I let my imagination fly away with one more story.

     On April 23rd, World Book Day, through the Aprendizes de Escritores/Writers’ Apprentices Blog, where I write (one thing that we can always improve by reading), I congratulate this priceless companion, the book.

P.S.: We can’t forget that millions of people in the world don’t have access even to printed books much less to ebooks. We can never consider libraries or used books stores outdated. We have to divulge projects and initiatives such as itinerant libraries, book sales on bookstores and the books donation campaigns, also donating books when we can.

Photography as a Hobby

     I love to take pictures, but with a simple camera, as most people do. They’re pictures of an amateur, unpretentious pictures I’ve always taken the way I know, without the aesthetic considerations and techniques of the area professionals. I also enjoy creating collages and mosaics with these pictures.

     They are pictures I take during common outings, especially of landscapes, flowers, parks, or even of interesting things on the streets…  There are amazing urban landscapes. I use to photograph almost everything I think is beautiful, pleasant _ things I like to eternalize together with my memories (those memories of good times when we feel so great). Of the zoo giraffe only, for instance, I must have some two hundred pictures! But I take pictures as a hobby because I’m in the Letters area.

     It’s not the camera that takes the pictures, but the photographer. There’s, therefore, a big difference between professional and amateur photographers like me. Those who take pictures as amateurs, do it as a hobby and just for fun.

     Professional photographers are sensitive and they’ve got the gift to take the best out of an image with theirs lens and transmit it to those who see it later. They study a lot, they master the use of their equipment and use several techniques. They know the best angles, make the due framing and perfectly catch the light. Photography is an art.

     Thus, no matter how sophisticated the equipment, nothing can replace the real photographer when it comes to professional photography.

Leitura Como Meio de Convívio Social

     

    

      A leitura não deve ser encarada como um refúgio no sentido de completa fuga da realidade, como acontece em alguns casos. Claro, é delicioso mergulhar num universo de fantasia por algum tempo, mas também é essencial ficarmos cientes do mundo real. A leitura, que tanto serve para entretenimento quanto para informação, pode ser algo como um encontro com nós mesmos, mas também nos prepara para encontros com os demais, para um convívio gratificante, salutar, com nossos semelhantes.

     Através dos vários tipos de leitura disponíveis, enriquecemos nosso conhecimento, adquirimos mais e mais coisas para partilhar com as outras pessoas. A leitura pode ser um recanto, para onde vamos quando queremos espairecer, mas não deve ser algo introspectivo demais, que acabe nos privando da companhia dos outros e nos afastando de outras atividades.

      É muito bom e útil lermos sozinhos, mas também é ótimo quando lemos acompanhados e para os outros, especialmente para as crianças. Ler para as crianças é uma experiência das mais gratificantes, um benefício mútuo, pois não apenas lhes descortinamos um mundo novo através dos livros, mas também desfrutamos momentos de um alegre convívio, fortalecemos laços. A leitura une as pessoas.

     Você pode criar um divertido Clube do Livro com amigos(as) e/ou participar dos grupos existentes no gênero nas redes sociais. Você terá condições de trocar ideias sobre diversos assuntos que andou lendo, ou conversar frente a frente com pessoas interessantes sobre um livro que "prendeu" você.

     Enfim, as possibilidades de expandir e enriquecer seu convívio social através da leitura são abrangentes e imperdíveis.

Reading as a Means of Social Contact

     Reading mustn’t be faced as a form of refuge in the sense of absolute escape from reality, as it happens in some cases. It’s naturally delightful to plunge into a universe of fantasy for some time, but it’s also essential for us to be aware of the real world and interact with it. Reading, which not only serves for entertainment but also for information, may be a way of encountering ourselves, but it also prepares us for encounters with other people, for a satisfying, healthful interaction with them.

     Through the several kinds of reading material available, we improve our knowledge, and we learn more and more things to share with others. Reading can be a pleasant retreat, where we go to when we want to entertain ourselves, but it mustn’t be a too much introspective thing, that could end up depriving us of other people’s company and making us withdraw from other activities.

     It’s very good and useful to read alone, but it’s also great when we read with others, specially when we read for children. To read for children is one of the most gratifying experiences in life, a mutual benefit, because we not only unveil a new world for them through the books, but we also enjoy moments of cheerful human contact, and strengthen bonds.

    You can create an amusing Book Club with friends and/or take part of the existing groups of this kind in the social networks. You will be able to exchange ideas about several subjects that you’ve been reading about, or to talk face to face with interesting people about a book that has captivated you. Reading is great to bring people together.

     The possibilities to expand and enrich your social contact through reading are comprehensive and you can’t miss the chance to reap the fruit it can bear.

Nova Era

       Certo dia, me apanhei dizendo ao meu filho:

      _ Tudo o que você precisar saber, pergunte ao seu pai, a mim, ou... ao Google!

     Meu tom foi de brincadeira, claro, mas não pude deixar de pensar em quanto de verdade há nisso. A simples palavra Google já se tornou parte do nosso vocabulário cotidiano e o próprio Google é parte inerente da vida das pessoas, apesar de ter apenas uma década e meia. Não há muito tempo e eu passava horas fazendo exaustivas pesquisas em enciclopédias e dicionários impressos para o trabalho. Agora, pulamos rapidamente de um link para o outro, encontrando informações detalhadas. O cuidado que se deve tomar é quanto à fonte da publicação. Temos de checar se é confiável, a fim de podermos usar os dados da maneira necessária, quer a pesquisa seja escolar, para o trabalho ou demais finalidades. Não é raro encontrarmos o mesmo texto sobre um determinado tema repetido várias vezes em sites ou blogs, pois é copiado de um lugar para o outro e, geralmente, sem os devidos créditos.

     Às vezes, fico atordoada com a quantidade de informações, até me perco. Vou adicionando tudo à barra de favoritos e, quando vou ver, nem sei mais onde estão as coisas mais importantes. Isso aconteceu, por exemplo, no livro que traduzi sobre armas. A profusão de material é incrível. É a força do hábito, mas tenho o costume de usar um pouco de material de apoio de pesquisa impresso, como enciclopédias ou livros que tenho, ou que adquiro no sebo para cada trabalho. Mas, devido à minha profissão, é apenas para uma verificação mais apurada, pois no Google realmente encontramos uma infinidade de informações.

     Uma vez, pesquisando uma palavra qualquer para o trabalho, acabei parando numa seção bem pesada, imprópria mesmo, e... oh, o Google perdeu toda a inocência para mim. Mais ou menos como quando, enfim, ficamos sabendo sobre o Papai Noel. Mas... fazer o quê? O conteúdo do que é encontrado através do Google é um retrato do mundo real, de tudo o que acontece nele, da vida nua e crua como ela é.

     Cabe a cada um usar o seu próprio “filtro”, de acordo com o que está procurando/pesquisando e fazer muitas comparações e verificações de fontes. E deve-se ficar de marcação cerrada em cima da criançada, sim. Porque, inevitavelmente, há coisas que se encontram através do Google e na internet em geral que não são nada adequadas para menores. E não me refiro a apenas pornografia, mas violência, terror, maus exemplos e riscos de todos os tipos que, infelizmente, existem e não devem ser ignorados pelos responsáveis. Quando se navega em águas seguras, porém, desfrutando tudo que a internet tem de positivo, é como estar num País das Maravilhas.

     É fascinante como achamos praticamente tudo e, muitas vezes, ilustrado e/ou acompanhado de vídeos, desde letras de músicas, endereços, passando por filmes, assuntos diversos, até trabalhos acadêmicos, museus, bibliotecas, outros países e culturas, o fundo do mar, o Universo... Às vezes, temos de “discutir” com o Google quando ele “responde”: “Você quis dizer X”. Claro que digito errado ocasionalmente, mas, em geral, foi aquilo mesmo que quis pesquisar. Em outras, imploramos: “Google, “pelamordedeus”, o que é....?” E lá encontramos satisfeitos as respostas para a maioria das nossas indagações.

New Era

The other day, I caught myself telling my son: “Everything you need to know, ask your father, me, or... Google!” I was kidding, of course, but I couldn’t avoid thinking that this is nonetheless a truthful statement. The simple word Google is already part of our everyday vocabulary and Google itself is a part of people’s life, thought it dates of only a decade and a half ago. Not so long ago I used to spend hours doing exhaustive researches in printed encyclopedia and dictionaries for work. Now, we are able to jump quickly from one link to another, finding detailed information. We only have to be careful with the source of the posts. We have to check if they are a reliable source, in order to use data the way we need, whether the research is for school, for work or other purposes. It’s not rare to find the repetition of the same text about a certain theme several times in websites or blogs, because it’s copied from one place to the other and, frequently, without the due credits.

     Sometimes, I’m overwhelmed by the amount of information and I even get lost. I keep adding everything to the favorites bar, and, suddenly, I don’t even know anymore where the most important things are. This has happened, for instance, in the book I translated about weapons. The amount of research material is enormous. It’s a habit, but I always use some printed material as a support when researching, such as the encyclopedia or books I have or that I buy in the used books store for each translation work. Due to my profession, it’s only a crisscross verification because we do find endless information in Google.

Once, when researching a certain word for one of my translations, I ended up in a very heavy section, really improper, and… oh, Google lost all the innocence for me. It’s kind of like when we learn about Santa Claus. But... what can we do? The contents of what we find in Google are a portrait of the real world, of everything that happens in it, of the raw and crude life such as it is.

     Each one has to know how to use their own filter, according to what he/she is searching and make lots of comparisons of the researched sources. And, yes, we must supervise what kids see in the internet. Because, unavoidably, there are things we find in Google and the internet itself that are not adequate for kids. And I’m not only talking about pornography, but also about violence, horror, bad examples and all kinds of risks which, unfortunately, exist and can’t be ignored by parents, teachers and general carers. When we navigate through safe waters, though, enjoying what is positive in the internet, it’s like being in the Wonderland.

     The way we find almost everything is fascinating, and, usually, illustrated and/or accompanied by videos, from lyrics, addresses, going through movies, general stuff, to academic essays, museums, libraries, other countries and cultures, to the bottom of the sea, the Universe… Sometimes, we need to “argue” with Google when it “answers”: “You meant X”. Of course I mistype things once in a while, but, generally, that was really what I wanted to research. Other times, we beg “Google, for God’s sake, what is…?” And there we gladly find the answers to most of our questions.

The Benefits of the Sense of Humor

Sometimes we have a sense of humor that is difficult for certain people to understand, depending on the occasion and on the circumstances. I admire several humorists, of a variety of types and styles. The kind of sense of humor I like most, though, is the naïve and joyful one, the one that brings fun and make us laugh in an innocent way. Like the sense of humor of the brilliant Jerry Lewis, with whom in fact we can identify ourselves sometimes, at least with his characters, because who isn’t a little clumsy?

     With hundreds and hundreds of things to do and without time to pay the due attention to certain details that go by unnoticed, we can end up in comic and confusing situations! I guess everybody knows those humorists who, in order not to let a joke unspoken, end up talking without thinking first. Not to mention that the humor concept is relative. What may seem hilarious to one person is not for the other one and so on…

     The most important thing is to be able to extract joyful laughter from people because, as I use to say, I really think sense of humor is part of our “surviving kit”, that it’s essential to soften the tension and stress of the modern world. The joyful, honest and naïve sense of humor is the one that really comes from the soul and it certainly pleases everyone.

     Let your Jerry Lewis’ side emerge a little bit more each day too!
