Os livros que traduzo não são meus, pertencem aos autores, claro. Mas eu os traduzo como se fossem meus, de todo o coração e alma. Quando você traduz, tem de entrar na mente do autor, decifrar o que ele está pensando, entender seus sentimentos para que o livro fique perfeito. Sinto forte empatia pelo autor e me empenho ao máximo para que o conteúdo de seu livro em português fique exatamente como é no original em inglês. Traduzir é fascinante. Além do conhecimento em idiomas, tenho de pesquisar muito e acabo lendo e aprendendo uma porção de coisas interessantes. É por essa razão que fico tão orgulhosa quando vejo resultado. O livro não é meu, mas eu o tratei como se fosse o meu tesouro ao longo de todo o caminho.

The books I translate are not mine, they belong to the authors, of course. But I translate them as if they were mine, with all my heart and soul. When you translate, you have to enter in the author’s mind, to know what he/she’s thinking, understand his/her feelings so the book can be perfect. I feel this strong empathy with the author and make all the efforts for his/her book to be in Portuguese exactly the way it is in its original form in English. Translating is fascinating. Besides the knowledge in languages, I have to research a lot and end up reading and learning a lot of interesting things. That’s why I’m so proud when I see the result. The book is not mine, but I treated it as if it was my “baby” all the way.

Não coloquei meu currículo aqui no blog como meio de arranjar trabalhos, mas, sim, porque estou reunindo dicas sobre como se elaborar um currículo, que postarei em breve. Dificilmente alguém daria emprego a uma pessoa só porque viu seu CV num blog. E, no meu caso, não consigo traduzir livros em sequência para mais do que uma editora ao mesmo tempo.

Já enfrentei períodos de escassez de traduções em algumas editoras e tive de enviar meu currículo para todas as que conhecia. Apesar da minha experiência, foram todos ignorados. Quando consegui trabalho novamente, foi graças a um teste de tradução, o que sempre costuma ser solicitado no meu tipo de tradução. Depois, com o passar do tempo, como em qualquer profissão, o tradutor tem que provar através dos seus textos se sabe fazer o que diz ou não. Em uma das inúmeras analogias que poderia fazer, é como se um cantor com 10 ou 20 CDs gravados, ainda tivesse que subir no palco e mostrar que sabe mesmo cantar.

Esse é o ponto crucial, a capacidade em si, e o currículo é uma mera formalidade inicial, embora seja útil e necessária como informação.

Comecei a trabalhar com 16 anos como auxiliar de escritório, passando a secretária, secretária executiva bilíngue e, finalmente, me tornei tradutora freelancer, como sou até hoje. Este currículo é um mero complemento à parte do blog em que comento sobre o meu trabalho. Também serve como mais uma ilustração à outra parte do Blog Aprendizes de Escritores em que escrevo e procuro incentivar a escrita e a leitura. De um jeito ou de outro, a escrita e a leitura sempre fizeram parte da minha vida pessoal e profissional. tj*¬

I didn’t post my résumé here as a way of getting work, but because I'm gathering some tips about how to prepare a résumé that I'll post here soon. A person would hardly give jobs to people just because he/she saw their CVs in a blog. And, in my case, I’m not able to translate books for more than one publisher at the same time.

I’ve already faced times in which translations were scant in some publishers and I had to send my resume to all the publishers I knew. Despite my experience, they were all promptly ignored. When I got work again, it was thanks to a translation test, which it’s usually required in my kind of work. After that, with time, as in any other profession, the translator has to prove through his/her texts if he/she knows how to work. In one of many analogies I could make, it is as if a singer with 10 or 20 CDs, still had to go on stage and sing to show he/she can do it. This is the crucial point, the capacity itself, and the resume is a mere initial formality, though it’s useful and necessary as information.

I started to work at 16 as an office clerk, than a secretary and executive bilingual secretary, and, finally, became a freelancer translator, as I continue to be. This resume is a simple complement to the part of the blog in which I comment about my work. It’s also an illustration to the other part of the Writers’ Apprentices Blog in which I write and make efforts to encourage writing and reading. In a way or another, writing and reading have always been a part of my personal and professional life. tj*¬
