Happy Translator's Day!

The International Translators’ Day is celebrated on September 30th on the feast of St. Jerome, the Bible translator who is considered as the patron saint of translators because he translated what was recognized as the official version of the Bible into Latin, the Vulgate.

Minha Tradução de O Príncipe dos Lugares Perdidos

Título Original:      Prince of Lost Places
Autora:                  Kathy Hepinstall
Editora:                 Best Seller

Sinopse:

Comentário Sobre a Minha Tradução:

Human and Automated Translation

Nothing substitutes the flesh and blood translator and interpreter. The professional translator doesn’t use translation machines to perform his work for him. He/she can, however, use the available translation devices to understand a bit the languages he/she doesn’t know and increase his/her knowledge about other peoples and cultures as well, in cases he/she can’t count on foreign colleagues to help him/her. I believe technology serves to help man, never to substitute him. It’s always man’s intelligence that’s behind the machines.
The “Phraselator” technology mentioned here, from the glorious “Star Trek”, is actually being used nowadays, especially in the military area. Those who are smart enough to use it when it’s strictly necessary, however, are also smart to know they’re carrying a kind of electronic phrase dictionary, not a versatile human translator and interpreter.
A translator uses a bilingual dictionary (and even consults reliable translation sites) as a mere tool, the same way a writer uses his native language dictionary to elucidate doubts. But there’s a big difference between the human and the automated translation and their respective usages.
Only the human translation transmits the precise sense of a text in a way that’s completely understandable to the reader. The automated translation, in its turn, has a fantastic comprehensiveness of languages and it’s a useful and valid tool to several kinds of professional in many situations. When there can’t be an interpreter available, the automated translation facilitates the communication between several peoples during trips around the world and the cultural interchange. (I myself, for instance, here on the blog, as I mention on the presentation, have included the Google translator because _ though I never use it professionally as a translator, since translations are too literal and usually don’t “fit” _ I think it’s a very useful tool for any language reader to understand at least the contents of a foreign text).
Basically, it would be something more or less like this: “Just when the access to a “Personal Human Translator” is not possible for some reason, take your “Phraselator” with you.
Translation is not a mechanic act. It’s not the transcription of word for word of a text literally. It’s a kind of craftsmanship, even an art. As an example, when we translate a word from English to Portuguese, such as “water”, we have one meaning, but if we add another word, such as in “water clock”, “water closet”, “water mill”, “waterfall”, “waterfront”,  the meaning changes, naturally, and the translator has to know that in order not to translate those words separately and getting wrong meanings. If you take a word in Portuguese such as “água” (water), and add other words such as in “água-viva” (jelly-fish), “água sanitária” (chlorine bleach), água-forte (etching) etc., you have other meanings. In phrases, and, especially in paragraphs and longer texts, the meaning one wants to give to words and to the general context becomes more complex, and so it would be impossible to merely replace words. That is, translation can’t be done word for word, literally. It’s a combination of ideas, a composition elaborated with the knowledge of the origin and target languages and of several cultural aspects, besides other factors.
The same way an artisan creates a piece with all his/her care, the translator composes a translation by attaining the feat of being faithful to the author and, at the same time, being faithful to the reader.

My humble tribute to the brilliant “Star Trek” which I was be able to
watch in Brazil (among countless people), when I was a kid, thanks
to the talent and dedication of several professionals,
including the translators.

O LIVRO DO PORQUÊ

Título Original:     The Book of Why
Autor:                    Nicholas Montemarano
Editora:                 LeYa

Sinopse:

In the translator’s month, I’m posting here about one of my most recent translations on the main page. To those who may be interested, the link to the additional page of the blog where I comment about the books I’ve been translating through the years is as follows:

THE BOOK OF WHY

SYNOPSIS IN ENGLISH:

The power to solve your problems is within you-with the right sense of belief, the mind's ability to create success, happiness, and health is limitless.
At least that's the philosophy of self-help author Eric Newborn, whose books and lectures have spawned a legion of devoted followers who swear that his ideas have pulled their lives from the brink. But after the traumatic loss of his wife, Eric is left to face the darker side of his own teachings, living as a recluse in the home they shared on Martha's Vineyard, struggling to reconcile his worldview with the pain he has suffered. It's a fundamental question that haunts him: why?
When a fan with questions forces Eric to face the world once again, he's put on a path that might lead him towards the closure he seeks, but in astounding ways he could never begin to dream.
At once a stirring portrait of a soul laid bare by grief and a celebration of coincidence and the magic of real connection, The Book of Why explores the deep powers of the heart and mind to shape the world around us, blurring the lines between loss and love, fate and free will, and despair and joy. Ao Tradutor

Esta é a homenagem mais bonita que já vi um autor fazendo ao tradutor.

“Quando o homem mostrou sua arrogância, Deus destruiu
a Torre de Babel e todos passaram a falar línguas diferentes.
Mas em Sua infinita graça, criou também um tipo de gente
que iria reconstruir essas pontes, permitir o diálogo e a difusão
do pensamento humano. Esse homem (ou mulher) de quem
raramente nos damos ao trabalho de saber o nome quando
abrimos um livro estrangeiro: o tradutor.”

_ Paulo Coelho, "O Outro Lado da Torre de Babel"

To the Translator

This is the most beautiful homage I’ve seen an author paying to the translator.

"When man grew ambitious, God destroyed the
Tower of Babel, and everyone began to speak
different tongues. However, in His infinite grace,
he also created people to rebuild those bridges,
to enable dialogue and the diffusion of human
thought. This person, whose name we rarely
take the trouble to notice when we open a
foreign book, is the translator.”

Mês do Tradutor / Translator's Month

Since I created the blog, in April/2011, it has been through a total change and it’s on a constant evolution, thought the initial contents remain the same. In the beginning, the main page was about translations and I used to write my texts on some of the additional pages. Then, it occurred to me that the blog would be more interesting if I posted the articles and chronicles on the main page instead. This way, I changed everything from one place to another, putting the comments about the books I translated on an additional page and gave the blog the name Aprendizes de Escritores. I also call it Writers’ Apprentices because I’m turning it into a bilingual blog with time.
As we celebrate the Translator’s International Day on September 30th, this month I’ll post here on the main page of the blog a little bit of the contents of the additional pages related to translations.

Paz

Tão belas quanto a flor.

Peace

The first thing that caught his eye was the sun. It's been so long since he has been out in the sun. There was a golden, gentle glow that encompassed everything around. And its balmy warmth on his skin was so pleasant. There were no clouds in the sky of the purest azure. It occurred to him that he has never seen such a bright, blue sky before. Pigeons floated ethereally above, in the relative distance, white, gracious, slowly moving their wings of plumes that looked impossibly soft. Were they pigeons or angels?
He started to walk, hesitantly at first, but suddenly, he realized that his legs were strong, vigorous, and he was no longer afraid of walking. In fact, he was delighted by the fact that he could walk again, stepping firmly and confidently on the ground covered by lush green grass. Looking around, he saw wheat fields in the distance, undulating under the breeze, peaceful as those of his childhood, when he used to run joyfully through their golden rows.
He noticed that now he was passing through dense bushes in which flowers of all colors grew in profusion. He crouched down to pick one of them. It was so fragrant! But what surprised him most was his agility. It was so easy to move to pick the flower! He felt its perfume again, breathing deeply, letting the air fill his lungs. He felt so well and in good form, sturdy. He looked at the flower of a delicate yellow, and it was when he saw it… His hands. They were no longer bony and wrinkled. They were young, firm, healthy hands. As beautiful as the flower.
Amazed and feeling deeply at peace, a peace like he’s never felt before, he kept walking, dazzled by all the details, savoring each moment. He listened to the low murmur of water, and soon enough he was passing by a waterfall. He took his time to contemplate the frothy water which ran between the rocks into a crystal clear pond. Getting closer, he wet his feet on the margin, enjoying the freshness of the water, allowing all his senses to be soothed by the beauty and tranquillity around. He kept walking, then, with agility but, at the same time, slowly. There was no hurry for anything. Everything was inviting there.
It was then that he saw her. She was waving lightly at him, standing by a leafy tree. She looked familiar. She was young, beautiful, full of life. He felt like giving her the flower. The flower he held with admirable firmness in his hand. With determined but calm steps, he kept going as she smiled and waved at him. He gave her the flower, and also smiled when she took it and their hands touched.

     It was his beloved Conceição.

Escrita_Writing - facebook

Escrita_Writing is a bilingual page I have on facebook that aims to encourage writing and reading, but it’s also about general subjects. It includes, among other things, articles, quotes, tips, beautiful images, sense of humor. It’s also an extension of my blogs. I’m always choosing interesting things to post there, weather they are from the blogs or subjects and images I find on the internet, or hear about on daily life. I enjoy transmitting positive messages to people and I’m always looking for motivational quotes from varied thinkers to post on Escrita_Writing, besides the incredible images and gifs I end up finding.
I also post collages and mosaics with public domain images and my own pictures of landscapes, and I give tips about the free photo editors online I use. I also post tips about books, translation and writing, among other things, and I believe that the fact that it’s a bilingual page help those who are interested in both languages to have this additional contact with them.

Anyway, the bilingual posts are independent, and the reader of any of these languages can follow them as he/she does on a conventional page of a single idiom. As I know a bit of Spanish, I include quotes and greeting cards in this language on the page as well.

As I use to joke, Escrita_Writing is the twin sister of Writing_Escrita (https://twitter.com/Writing_Escrita), which I have on twitter, though they are not identical ones. I don’t connect one page with the other and post different things in each one of them.

Writing_Escrita - Twitter

Writing_Escrita is a bilingual page I have on Twitter that aims to encourage writing and reading, but it’s also about general subjects. Though there’s the 140 characters limit on Twitter, now it’s possible to add up to 4 images with each post, and I vary the things I post with quotes from several thinkers, interesting images, writing, reading, and translation tips, comic cards, etc.
I use Twitter to know more about peoples and cultures from all over the world, including my own, and Writing_Escrita has followers from my country and several other places. It’s a recent page, with few followers yet, but I don’t mind that because these things I aim are not related to the number of followers. Nowadays, people even sell “followers by the lot”, what I frankly find funny. I respect those who sell and buy them, because each one has their own reasons for this, but that’s not my case.

When I created Writing_Escrita, I followed every page I considered interesting and I continue to do that occasionally, but, in general, I just leave the page calmly there and follow back those who follow me. I concentrate myself mostly on the posts themselves, on those I do and from others.

As I use to joke, Writing_Escrita is the twin sister of Escrita_Writing (https://www.facebook.com/EscritaWriting) , which I have on Twitter, though they are not identical ones. I don’t connect one page with the other and posts different things in each one of them.
