     Você publicou seu primeiro livro. Sonho realizado!

     Não houve um evento de lançamento, nem noite de autógrafos, nem mesmo um jantar especial num restaurante chique.

     Você comemorou. Com sua inseparável xícara de café pelando e uma fatia de bolo de fubá, porque você também cozinha _ ou por necessidade ou por gosto. Com o devido orgulho, você comentou com meio mundo que publicou seu livro. Todos ficaram admirados, lhe deram os efusivos parabéns, falaram que mal podiam esperar para ler.

     Ninguém comprou o seu livro, ninguém leu _ nem mesmo o e-book, que é bem mais barato. Nem mesmo para dar uma força. Por quê? O seu livro não é interessante? Deve ser, mas o fato é que, na vida corrida de hoje em dia, a maioria das pessoas não consegue dar conta de tantas coisas para fazer em tão pouco tempo. (Eu mesma tenho uma pilha de livros interessantes só à espera de eu arranjar tempo para lê-los.) E a maioria das pessoas também não tem dinheiro para mais nada.

     Não importa. Você prometeu a si mesmo que, quando tiver dinheiro, vai comprar uns exemplares para dar de presente para algumas pessoas. Nem que seja para enfeitar a estante. Bem ou mal, como uma recordação sua. Até agora, só deu para comprar o seu próprio exemplar _ e olhe lá! E não que você esteja tão preocupado com as vendas em si. Para um escritor, o mais importante é que alguém leia aquilo que escreveu com tanta dedicação.

     Nada abala você. Continua com os seus projetos, vai publicar mais coisas. Nada de ficar naquela de escritor de um livro só. Nesse meio tempo, faz o seu marketing caseiro para divulgar o seu livro, o seu “precious”. Faz postagens exaustivamente no Twitter, cria uma página especialmente para ele no facebook. Implora a todo mundo para curtir sua página.

      Há quase sempre duas hipóteses possíveis, mas costuma haver um só resultado. A primeira é quando poucos curtem a sua página, porque a maioria nem sequer vê a mensagem que você enviou pedindo para curtir, ou esquece, ou deixa para lá achando que isso não tem a menor importância para você. E não deveria ter porque, na segunda hipótese, você conquista milhares de curtidas para a página do seu livro e centenas de retweets nas suas postagens, mas chega ao tal resultado único. Ninguém lê, nem suas postagens e muito menos o seu livro. Comprar, então, é raro. Salvo exceções como as das celebridades, você pode ter duzentas mil curtidas na sua página e terá 3 curtidas em uma ou outra postagem e capa, ou perfil.

Descaso? Não. Praticamente ninguém tem tempo para ler as páginas que curte no facebook, nem os tweets porque a enxurrada de informações é gigantesca, absurdamente grande para que alguém consiga dar conta.

Fazer o quê? Você prossegue incansável com seu marketing caseiro, o seu único meio de divulgação gratuito. Qualquer tipo de marketing positivo é válido, indispensável, para quem quer tentar vender seu peixe. De repente, porém, você percebe que isso anda tomando tanto o seu tempo que não está se dedicando como deveria aos seus próximos projetos. Já teria dado tempo para publicar mais uns três livros. E para que mesmo, se ninguém vai ler, ou comprar?, você se pergunta no final das contas. Bem, como se diz, a esperança é a última que morre... E você prossegue.

     Prossegue durante o tempo que lhe sobra na sua rotina corrida, porque você também tem que trabalhar. Tem que ganhar seu sustento de algum jeito. Já basta ouvir os que lhe perguntam: “Mas para que perder tempo publicando livros? Isso não dá dinheiro. Por que não usa o seu tempo fazendo alguma coisa mais útil? Mais lucrativa?” A sua satisfação pessoal, aquela que não tem preço? É praticamente só ela que vai motivando você.

     Imperturbável, lembra a si mesmo que até pouco tempo nem sequer havia a facilidade de publicar de graça. Lançar um livro parecia uma coisa do outro mundo. Lembra de todos os que jamais chegaram a publicar algo, ou dos que nem sequer podiam contar com um blog para escrever. Então, apesar de todas as dificuldades, publicar de maneira independente vale a pena? Muito. No mínimo, _ e acima de tudo _ você deixará um legado para os seus filhos. As suas palavras. Sem mencionar que é sempre bom para o currículo.

    Você também pensa também em todos os escritores que foram consagrados apenas postumamente, nas dificuldades que enfrentaram, nos calos que cresceram em seus dedos ao manusearem a pena interminavelmente ao longo de pergaminho após pergaminho. Não que você esteja se comparando. Afinal, em meio a inúmeros tipos de escritores, cada caso é um caso. E existem até os muito bem-sucedidos, os que ganham rios de dinheiro merecidamente com obras brilhantes, ou com porcarias, devido ao marketing, ou sorte, ou sabe-se lá o quê.

Não importa. Você prossegue. Inabalável. Nasceu escritor.

Feliz Dia Mundial do Escritor!

     Além das técnicas de escrita e normas do idioma que um escritor aprende para aprimorar seu dom, o mais importante é escrever com os sentimentos. Escrever é um dom que costuma se manifestar ainda na infância, através da facilidade em se criar redações para a escola, diários e textos em geral. Escrever é um dom que anda de mãos dadas com a imaginação. Ela é a principal matéria prima do escritor. Pode-se pedir a um escritor que escreva sobre praticamente qualquer coisa, por mais banal que seja, e as palavras fluirão naturalmente para ele enquanto compuser seu texto.

 

Happy World Writers' Day

     Besides the techniques and rules of his language that a writer learns to improve his gift, the most important thing is to write with feelings. Writing is a gift that walks hand in hand with imagination. Imagination is the main raw material of the writer. We can ask a writer to write about practically everything, even the most trivial things, and the words will flow naturally for him/her when composing his/her text.

Messages in Bottles

     In this endless Ocean of information, I just send messages in bottles, and once in a while, someone opens one here and there, though I don’t know if what I write is good, or not. I simply write because I like to write and must do it when something pops into my mind. Maybe this is what inspiration is like, and I always bring paper and pen with me. In this same endless Ocean, everybody sends messages in bottles, and there are more bottles than water itself. So, the only choice is to grab bottles at random and see what messages we are able to find, unless we are looking for specific bottles. Even then, there’s such a giant amount of information every day, we end up overwhelmed by it.

     I admire thousands of people, not necessarily in any kind of order, but I admire people like Paulo Coelho, Brian May, Madre Teresa, a few popes (especially Johh Paul II), Dalai Lama, Sting, Jane Austen, Freddie Mercury, Ghandi, Jerry Lewis, Machado de Assis, St. Michael the Archangel (No heresy at all, but does anybody know if Jesus Himself has got a facebook page?), Xico Xavier, Steve Martin, just to name a few of the famous ones (yes, I’m eclectic), but there are other thousands of anonymous people I like as well. The point is I’m simply not able to see and keep up with all the things I enjoy, to read the wise words or silly stuff I like. It’s impossible, and, with no stress, I just pick one bottle with a message here and there. Except when I have to research something for work, but I’m talking more in terms of the social networks, not books we choose to read, or study. And not to mention all the garbage that, unfortunately, is thrown into this otherwise interesting Ocean…

     As I was saying to my friend recently, I don’t care about this “Like” thing on facebook, though I enjoy when people like and comment my posts, naturally. I like everyone’s pages, it’s just to ask me, and I go there and like it (unless is a satanic thing, or something). So I’m not selective? Not a bit. I also “like” things without people asking me, for sure, and I actually enjoy this stuff people ask me too. But the point is I Like things also to encourage people, ‘cause I know the things they do are important to them, and that they wanna share it. Few are those who like my pages, though, but whatever. To me, what’s the use of 200,000 likes or followers if not a single soul among them will my book, follow my blog, really read my things? Anyway, thanks for the likes; I appreciated each one of them.

     By the way, only a few strangers bought my book, bless them. Not even my close relatives and friends bought my book. But who needs family and friends anyway? lol. Not that I intend to make money with a book, especially not here where books in general are too expensive, except in book sales. No, I have to really work to earn my keep.

30 de Setembro - Dia do Tradutor – São Jerônimo

   

     O Dia do Tradutor é comemorado mundialmente em 30 de setembro em homenagem a São Jerônimo, que traduziu a Bíblia para o latim, levando 15 anos para a sua conclusão. É também o Dia da Bíblia. Foi o Papa Dâmaso I que o incumbiu de traduzir a Bíblia para o latim, graças ao seu conhecimento deste idioma, do hebraico e do grego. O santo padroeiro dos tradutores morreu em 30 de setembro de 420, razão da escolha da data. São Jerônimo também é o santo protetor das Secretárias por ter sido o secretário do Papa Dâmaso.

Minha Tradução de O Príncipe dos Lugares Perdidos

Sinopse:

     Este é um livro bastante original que daria um ótimo filme com uma fotografia espetacular e eletrizantes efeitos especiais. Com o elenco certo, seria um blockbuster. Mas como é um livro, temos de contar com a nossa imaginação para fazermos essa jornada de aventura, suspense e emoções à flor da pele com Martha.

Como acontece com a maioria, Martha fica traumatizada com a violência de um atentado na escola de seu filho. Martha, porém, recorre a extremos que talvez poucos teriam a coragem de enfrentar.
     Tendo o misterioso deserto de Chihuahuán, na fronteira dos Estados Unidos com o México, como pano de fundo, Martha acredita estar fazendo o melhor para proteger o seu filho do mundo perigoso. Com um enredo muito bem escrito, a autora ainda nos reserva um impactante segredo do qual seus intrigantes personagens giram em torno.

Comentário Sobre a Minha Tradução:

     A maior dificuldade nesta tradução foi a que se encaixa na categoria “Como se traduz acarajé para o inglês?” Não se traduz. O texto da história em si foi tranqüilo porque é curto, tem uma linguagem fácil, acessível e é bastante claro e coerente. Quando cheguei à parte do deserto de Chihuahúan, onde a maior parte da história é ambientada, é que tive de “fritar os miolos”. Além dos termos de espeleologia para pesquisar, há uma porção de descrições de ambientes, plantas e animais que são típicos dessa região e, para alguns, não existe tradução no português. Então, foi fácil; só deixar como estava, certo? Não, primeiro, você precisa descobrir se não existe tradução mesmo, para deixar o mínimo de coisas possíveis no idioma estrangeiro. A não ser que sejam palavras estrangeiras que já foram praticamente incorporadas ao nosso vocabulário, como canyon (no caso aqui, havia muitos termos típicos em espanhol também). Não existindo tradução, você deixa como está, em itálico, mas tem de encontrar um meio de fazer o leitor entender do que se trata, sem jamais deixar de ser fiel ao autor. Só que temos de lembrar que o que é óbvio para uma pessoa pode não ser para a outra. 
     Há situações em que se pode/deve fazer uma pequena adaptação, mas não neste caso em que tudo é típico de um lugar que não é fictício. Muitas vezes, temos de recorrer às notas de rodapé. Particularmente, como leitora, não gosto muito de uma leitura cheia de notas de rodapé, porque acho que elas tiram a atenção do texto principal, mesmo tendo a ver com ele, e desconcentram um pouco. Assim, como tradutora, eu me coloco tanto no lugar do autor, procurando entender exatamente o que ele quis passar, e também no lugar do leitor, com a certeza de que este vai entender o que foi transmitido. Usando as notas de rodapé só quando realmente é necessário, às vezes acrescento uma explicação bem sucinta no próprio texto. Por exemplo, “o cacto cholla”, as "árvores salt cedars" e assim por diante.

    Gostei muito de fazer esta tradução, pois, além de me ensinar várias coisas, é uma história envolvente, que nos prende, tem um ótimo conteúdo e um desfecho surpreendente.

Human and Automated Translation

     Nothing substitutes the flesh and blood translator and interpreter. The professional translator doesn’t use translation machines to perform his work for him. He/she can, however, use the available translation devices to understand a bit the languages he/she doesn’t know and increase his/her knowledge about other peoples and cultures as well, in cases he/she can’t count on foreign colleagues to help him/her. I believe technology serves to help man, never to substitute him. It’s always man’s intelligence that’s behind the machines.

      The “Phraselator” technology mentioned here, from the glorious “Star Trek”, is actually being used nowadays, especially in the military area. Those who are smart enough to use it when it’s strictly necessary, however, are also smart to know they’re carrying a kind of electronic phrase dictionary, not a versatile human translator and interpreter.

      A translator uses a bilingual dictionary (and even consults reliable translation sites) as a mere tool, the same way a writer uses his native language dictionary to elucidate doubts. But there’s a big difference between the human and the automated translation and their respective usages.

     Only the human translation transmits the precise sense of a text in a way that’s completely understandable to the reader. The automated translation, in its turn, has a fantastic comprehensiveness of languages and it’s a useful and valid tool to several kinds of professional in many situations. When there can’t be an interpreter available, the automated translation facilitates the communication between several peoples during trips around the world and the cultural interchange. (I myself, for instance, here on the blog, as I mention on the presentation, have included the Google translator because _ though I never use it professionally as a translator, since translations are too literal and usually don’t “fit” _ I think it’s a very useful tool for any language reader to understand at least the contents of a foreign text).

     Basically, it would be something more or less like this: “Just when the access to a “Personal Human Translator” is not possible for some reason, take your “Phraselator” with you.

     Translation is not a mechanic act. It’s not the transcription of word for word of a text literally. It’s a kind of craftsmanship, even an art. As an example, when we translate a word from English to Portuguese, such as “water”, we have one meaning, but if we add another word, such as in “water clock”, “water closet”, “water mill”, “waterfall”, “waterfront”,  the meaning changes, naturally, and the translator has to know that in order not to translate those words separately and getting wrong meanings. If you take a word in Portuguese such as “água” (water), and add other words such as in “água-viva” (jelly-fish), “água sanitária” (chlorine bleach), água-forte (etching) etc., you have other meanings. In phrases, and, especially in paragraphs and longer texts, the meaning one wants to give to words and to the general context becomes more complex, and so it would be impossible to merely replace words. That is, translation can’t be done word for word, literally. It’s a combination of ideas, a composition elaborated with the knowledge of the origin and target languages and of several cultural aspects, besides other factors.

    The same way an artisan creates a piece with all his/her care, the translator composes a translation by attaining the feat of being faithful to the author and, at the same time, being faithful to the reader.

My humble tribute to the brilliant “Star Trek” which I was be able to

 watch in Brazil (among countless people), when I was a kid, thanks

 to the talent and dedication of several professionals,

including the translators.
